A lot of people give lip service to the topic of eco-friendly and being green. With global warming and all the concern with the environment we all have to find ways to conserve energy. Doing little things around the house will save you money in the long run. They have a geothermal heating and cooling systems now and wind mills for generating electricity. Both of these are becoming increasingly popular with home owners. Adding these things to a new home is one thing but some may not want to tear up their existing yard or re-work existing structures to add these energy saving systems. But you can still do little things that will make a difference. More and more people are adding rain barrels to their home’s gutters and down spouts. A rain barrel will catch anywhere from 38 to 250 gallons of rain water that can then be used to water the landscaping, shrubs, and flowers. This will drastically cut down on your water usage. Even if you have a sprinkler system you can just turn down the time duration that it runs or turn it off completely. Other uses for the rain water could be to wash the car or your pet. Adding a few rain barrels around the house to catch natural rain water will definitely save you money in the long run, it’s a good investment. Rain barrels are inexpensive, easy to set up and use, and can even be very decorative. It can give a house a very neat country look or you can buy one that looks more modern. Putting the rain barrel under one of the down spouts that covers a larger part of your roof will yield more water. Rain water can be kept for long periods of time until you can use it.
