A lot of people give lip service to the topic of eco-friendly and being green. With global warming and all the concern with the environment we all have to find ways to conserve energy. Doing little things around the house will save you money in the long run. They have a geothermal heating and cooling systems now and wind mills for generating electricity. Both of these are becoming increasingly popular with home owners. Adding these things to a new home is one thing but some may not want to tear up their existing yard or re-work existing structures to add these energy saving systems. But you can still do little things that will make a difference. More and more people are adding rain barrels to their home’s gutters and down spouts. A rain barrel will catch anywhere from 38 to 250 gallons of rain water that can then be used to water the landscaping, shrubs, and flowers. This will drastically cut down on your water usage. Even if you have a sprinkler system you can just turn down the time duration that it runs or turn it off completely. Other uses for the rain water could be to wash the car or your pet. Adding a few rain barrels around the house to catch natural rain water will definitely save you money in the long run, it’s a good investment. Rain barrels are inexpensive, easy to set up and use, and can even be very decorative. It can give a house a very neat country look or you can buy one that looks more modern. Putting the rain barrel under one of the down spouts that covers a larger part of your roof will yield more water. Rain water can be kept for long periods of time until you can use it.

We decided to remodel part of our house last summer to help with its curb appeal and value. Also for us to enjoy for the rest of the time we live there. After a small kitchen remodel and some updating we decided to take it outdoors. We live in a warm climate area so we use our deck a lot for cook-outs and family parties. We have always hosted a lot of family gatherings so we thought it was time for an upgrade. Our old grill had to go; it had seen better days so we got rid of it to start. Next we had a contractor come in and redesign our whole deck. We had a pretty elaborate design with flood lights, rope lighting, and the whole 9 yards. We went with a brick fire place in the middle of the deck and when it came time to choose a new grill for my soon to be finished deck, I decided to go with a built in Magic Fire grill. I choose a Magic Fire Grill and had the contractor build it right into a brick wall so it was like a permanent fixture. It also will help to protect it and since it is built into the wall it takes up less space. He built a brick chimney out the back to vent it. You can barely even tell that it is there. You do not really notice it until I start to cook on it. I love the Magic Fire Grills because they are stainless and very dependable. Of course I got the biggest grill that I could find since it was going into a wall. I wanted to get the best one possible. The contractor did make it so it could come back out if I wanted to remove or replace it.
A lot of people do not know what the black streaks on asphalt shingle roofs are. Well, they are a hardy type of airborne algae that has landed on the roof for particular reason and have begun to feed on the shingles. This algae will find nutrients in the limestone that is used in roofing shingles. Once it lands on your roof it will only get worse. It will never get better or go away unless treated. The roof algae will lessen the longevity of your shingles because it will not allow the shingles to reflect heat like they need to. It can also raise your home heating and cooling costs. The algae will usually first be noticeable on the north facing side of the roof. This is the side with the prevailing amount of shade and moisture. It is the same reason moss will grow on the north side of a tree. The good news is this roof algae can be killed, cleaned, and removed from your roof. Roof cleaning is a service that is available in most areas. The key to successful roof cleaning is to use what the major shingle manufacturers suggest using, which is a mix of bleach and trisodium phosphate (TSP). They recommend it be applied using low pressure so no harm is done to the shingle room. They warn against the use of a pressure washer. Never allow anyone to pressure wash your roof using excessive pressure. This will wash away the shingle granules which are there to protect the shingles. Low pressure and the right chemicals is the key. Like any surface that is exposed to the elements, roofs need cleaned and maintained occasionally so they last as expected. Shingle companies will not warranty shingles that are suffering from roof algae. They will tell you to have them cleaned using low pressure. Find a reputable roof cleaning company in your area.
In keeping with the gutter cleaning topic, not only can you have a professional contractor provide cleaning services for you, but you can also help by installing a gutter protection system. Gutter protection has come a long way in recent years. Keeping debris out of your gutters while still allowing water to be able to run off the roof and flow freely takes a special product. Finding the right product is the key to having good open gutters all season long. As we discussed in the previous post, clogged gutters can reap havoc on a homeowner. Water intrusion, flooded basement, and if you are in a cold weather State, ice dam damage can be a few of the problems resulting from plugged up gutters. A good gutter protection system can last many years, during which time having you gutters cleaned out should not be a concern. There are many systems on the market today so finding the right one can be tricky. Once you have found the right product for protecting your gutters, you may either want to install the system yourself or have a professional contractor do it for you. The important point is that the gutter protection system that you choose needs to be installed properly to ensure years of trouble free gutters. Following all the directions, guidelines, and safety precautions during installation of you new gutter protection is a must. Once your new gutter protection system is installed you can test it be spraying low pressure water onto your roof and allowing it to run off the roof. A good gutter system should not allow any water to drip over or out of the gutter. All the water should be flowing freely through your gutters and down the spouts. Check the end of the spouts to be sure water is flowing out as you are spraying onto the roof. Once installed properly, you should have trouble free gutters for years to come.
With leaves turning color and falling off the trees many people are thinking about getting their gutters cleaned. Having free flowing gutters going into winter is very important. With freezing and thawing all winter long your gutters need to be in good working order. Clogged gutters will build up with ice. Ice dams can grow larger and larger over the long winter to the point where the begin to lift your roof shingles and heave the roof itself. Water expands as it freezes and is extremely strong, it can even bust steal. Ice has no problem buckling your roofing material or even causing your gutters to come loose or fall down completely. It is important that your gutters are free of any debris before winter, meaning that you should have them cleaned sometime in mid to late fall after most of the leaves have fallen. A great idea is to couple gutter cleaning services with another service that is offered by cleaning professionals. For example, you might find a great deal on having your entire house washed in the fall and having the gutters cleaned at the same time. Roof cleaning, house washing, and gutter cleaning are great services to get in the fall because of the great deals. With most pressure washing contractor’s season coming to an end it can be very beneficial for you to capitalize on some great year end deals. House washing professionals will also do a much better job than some handyman that may not even carry insurance. Hiring a professional is always the best bet, remember that you get what you pay for and hiring a company that is fully insured and does the type of services that you are looking is going to be the best choice. If someone that is not insured falls off your roof it can be a lawsuit that you didn’t see coming. Always hire an insured ethical and reputable company to avoid any issues.
Adding fun and dazzling outdoor decor to your home can bring joy to others as well as yourself. The neighbors will certainly enjoy the boosted curb appeal, not only for visual appeal but because it helps keep the home values up in the community as well. Anytime you upgrade landscaping or add outside accents to your yard it has a positive effect on your home’s curb appeal and perceived value. As the holidays are approaching many homeowners will start to add spirit to their home’s and nowhere is this funner than in the front yard for all to see and enjoy. From Christmas lighting to nativity sets many homes will glow with the Christmas spirit all through the season. Holiday lighting can be professionally installed by a quality contractor. Many companies have started installing lights, ornaments, and other decorations on a professional level during the holidays. A nativity scene is also something a professional holiday decorating contractor can help you with. Lights and decorations are drawn out for the homeowner to see so they can get a feel for what the contractor has in mind. After the holidays are over the professional contractor will return to take down all the lights and decorations and return the yard to the homeowners as it was previously. This is a wonderful way to have a gorgeous yard with a splash of holiday without having to do the work yourself. Another benefit to a reputable company doing the work for you is that you won’t have to risk injury by climbing around on the roof or slippery ladder. If a light strand will not light, the contractor can take care of that for you. If a light goes out or a nativity scene piece falls over during the time you are displaying it, the decorating company will be out to fix it for you.
A lot of people ask when is a good time to get my house washed. Many people get their house washed during the spring as warm weather and rain start to sprout new growth. It is a busy time of the year for most contractors regardless of the line of work they are in. On average, May is typically the busiest time of year for most any service contractor. The second busiest month for most contractors providing residential services, and this goes for pressure washing contractors in the Midwest, may surprise you. It is September when the weather starts to cool and leaves start thinking about changing color. A lot of people decide to have their houses washed in the Fall as well as in the Spring. Both have their benefits but one of the main reasons people get it done in the Fall is because they have simply procrastinated all summer about it. Some homeowners may not even realize it at the time but with most pressure washing contractor’s year coming to an end, they may be a little more prone to give a discount or a good deal. Also a good reason to get the house washed in the Fall is that you can get the gutters cleaned out at the same time so they are flowing good for winter. Clogged gutters during winter can cause ice dams and roofing damage. In states like Indiana that see a lot of snow during the winter houses remain clean and still look like new when spring hits. So instead of feeling like you are waiting till the last minute on a Fall house wash look at it like you are getting ahead of the spring to do list for next year. Other services like roof cleaning, deck cleaning, and concrete cleaning are also available through the Fall months as long as the high temperatures remain around 50 degrees or so.
